Job Description:

We are seeking a full-time statistician/epidemiologist or health services researcher to join a general medicine/public health focused research program based in the San Francisco VA. This job involves working directly with UCSF researchers and SFVA Faculty. Ongoing cohort studies include the association of cannabis use with health outcomes (see https://phprg.ucsf.edu/), public opinion surveys on beliefs and attitudes towards marijuana use, studies examining the role of social determinants of health on outcomes, and research on health outcomes in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder. Ongoing research studies use informatics for cohort construction and some experience in working with text data is a plus. The incumbent will be responsible for developing analysis plans, performing and interpreting statistical analyses, and contributing to research publications and presentations.

Essential Functions:
  • Conduct analyses examining the association of cannabis use with health outcomes
  • Analyze national surveys on public opinion related to cannabis
  • Assist with data extraction, cleaning, and analysis for additional projects as needed
  • Contribute to research publications and presentations


  • Masters or PhD in health services research, statistics, epidemiology or related field preferred
  • At least 2 years prior experience in the analysis of clinical data with experience in large database analyses
  • Proficient in SAS or Stata
  • Strong computer skills and ability to apply study-specific software
  • Experience with a wide range of statistical methods including multivariable linear and logistic regression, GEE and linear mixed models, survival analysis, propensity score methods, multiple imputation, marginal structural modeling and meta-analysis.
  • Able to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
