Job Description:
The (Sr.) Production Chemist position is a technical position at the flagship RHS Facility that will report to the Chief Science Officer for technical and development related matters and Director of Operations or GM/Chief Operation Officer (COO) for production related matters.
The (Sr.) Production Chemist provides process and formulation chemistry support and to the Secondary Processing Production and Formulation Production Teams to ensure excellence in Process Safety, Reliability, Margin/Energy Optimization, and Cost Management. The (Sr.) Production Chemist works closely with and advises the Production Teams and Assistant Production Manager(s) and Supervisor(s) to provide technical assurance to unit operations and ensure production plan delivery and meeting production and project goals. In addition, the (Sr.) Production Chemist plays a key role in Data Collection and Analysis, Technical Reporting, Testing Coordination, Equipment, and Materials Sourcing, Continuous Process and Product Improvement, Project Development, and Turnaround Planning and Execution.
Responsibilities:
Provides laboratory management to the secondary processing and formulation/infusion teams as it relates to the scientific processes and procedures, according to his or her expertise.
Provides technical assurance and expertise to the Assistant Production Manager/Supervisor(s) and Production Team for the Secondary Processing of Cannabis Extracts to ensure successful delivery of quality processed cannabis materials.
Provides technical assurance and expertise to the Assistant Production Manager/Supervisor(s) and Production Team for the Formulation of Cannabis oil materials and Infusion of Cannabis oil materials for topical and ingestible products.
Implements and recommends improvements on existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Designs new SOPs when necessary for the introduction of newly assigned processes, equipment or products.
Manages the downstream development of cannabis bulk materials and products from small-scale laboratory to pilot plant and/or commercialization scale.
Analyzes information and evaluate results to identify issues with production and/or product, make recommendations for improvement, and present findings to the Scientific, Product, and Operations Management.
Prepares technical reports and presents them via oral, written and/or electronic means.
Assists in the management of data collection methods to be used in both the production and formulation functions of the position.
Assists in the management of the in-house and external analytical testing programs.
Carries out research as needed on assigned technology, concepts, technical opportunities, processes, and materials.
Serves as a general technical and problem-solving resource to the facility and to the functional production teams as it relates to the field of chemistry or other areas of expertise as needed.
Uses experimental designs, researches, analyzes and interprets data to determine feasibility/efficacy of proposed solutions.
Maintains current knowledge of relevant industry standards to ensure compliance with their requirements.
Provides, interprets, and communicates practical technical information to support other departments for the Company.
Supports the facility in implementing and maintaining current Good Manufacturing Practices, current Good Laboratory Practices.
Advises on and ensures appropriate Lab Safety Practices.
Maintains confidentiality of products, processes, projects, and clients.
Education and Experience Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering (B.S. preferred) plus at least 5 years experience in a production and/or development laboratory setting in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, dietary supplement, cosmetic, or cannabis industries., or Master’s Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemical Engineering (Organic Chemistry preferred) plus at least 2 year(s) experience (3-5 preferable) in a production and/or development laboratory setting in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, or cannabis industries, or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Chemical Engineering.
Has Product Development and Validation Experience.
Has strong working knowledge, experience, and expertise in centrifugation, filtration, distillation (wiped-film, short-path, fractional), chromatography, and other chemistry laboratory methods.
Some working knowledge and experience with analytical methods and instrumentation (HPLC, GC) preferred.
