Job Description:

We are a multi-line cannabis products company, specializing in both medical marijuana/CBD products, and health & wellness / personal care products. We have been in business since 2014 and have extensive research and experience in customized solutions for medical patients, including stage 3 and stage 4 cancer patients. We work with physician groups who direct all of their patients to us for their medicine and customized protocols.

We are also about to launch a new personal care product line. With that, we are looking to add an additional chemist to our team as a key member.

We are based in Huntington Beach, but the opportunity will be a combination of onsite work as well as research that can be completed remotely.

This is a profit sharing opportunity within our business with opportunity for stock ownership.

Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Production lead for current product lines and customized formulations.
  • Creates and develops new and improved products, innovative ideas, processes, protocols, techniques, and systems to support organizational goals
  • Creates and develops innovative and differentiated solutions
  • Manage the product development process, from small scale laboratory to pilot plant to commercialization scale
  • Monitor potential product formulations for stability over time and under varying levels of light and heat
  • Test potential products for resistance to bacterial growth
  • Communicate with sales, marketing, and business development teams about potential new products
  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant industry standards, and ensure compliance with their requirements
  • Effectively uses project management/milestone planning techniques to drive multiple concurrent opportunities
  • Carries out research on assigned technology, concepts, technical opportunities, materials
  • Identifies and/or evaluates materials or technologies to assess technical performance
  • Uses experimental designs, researches, analyzes and interprets data to determine feasibility/efficacy of proposed solutions
  • Proactively scans and researches new concepts, materials, technical opportunities
  • Provides, interprets, and communicates practical technical information using standard formats and archiving methods
  • Participates in and/or represents R&D by appropriately providing, interpreting and communicating practical technical information and project status
  • Is a technical and problem solving resource
  • Recommends product modifications and process improvements
  • Supports other R&D functions, Product Management Group, Regulatory
  • Implements, develops and/or improves test methodologies and/or processes
  • Supports patent or Licensing applications and maintains confidentiality
  • Follows and supports current Good Manufacturing Practices and current Good Laboratory Practices
  • Follows appropriate lab safety practices

Role Specific Requirements

  • Production:
  • Production lead for current product lines and custom formulations
  • Product Development:
  • Develops, identifies, and modifies new and existing formulations and technologies for improved performance and/or cost reduction
  • Establishes new methods for evaluating products
  • Leads interactions with contract formulation labs
  • Prepares samples for testing, such as stability, efficacy, or safety
  • Identifies process improvements with regard to routine lab testing
  • Effectively uses project management techniques to drive projects to completion
  • Prepares specifications for raw materials and formulations
  • Supports scale-up and pilot plant processing
  • Documents projects through technology transfer documentation and project reports
  • Process Research / Engineering:
  • Develops new processes for new or existing products
  • Designs experiments and protocols to ensure scalability and robustness of new and/or modified formulations and processes
  • Undertake research on ways to improve the production processes for existing products
  • Analytical Chemistry:
  • Interacts with external contract analytical labs to extend capabilities
  • Determines and manages data collection methods to be employed in research projects and panel surveys and guides statistical design and analysis of studies before and after execution
  • Analyzes information and evaluates results to identify issues and make recommendations and how they can be used
  • Technical Liaison:
  • Develops and delivers technical communications to support product performance, off-label information and infection control strategies to both internal and external customers
  • Assists in / Prepares scientific presentations to colleagues, customers/end-users, technical, medical and trade conferences
  • Serves as a technical resource

Duties May Also Include:

  • Actively participates in professional and technical organizations
  • Leads optimization of existing techniques, methods and processes and implements improvements
  • Leads creation of publications and/or presentations at technical conferences
  • Maintains all aspects of their departmental lab and establishes laboratory processes

Education and Experience Required

  • A minimum of one year’s professional experience as a formulation or product development scientist
  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Physical chemistry or Organic chemistry, or similar applied science field required

Additional General/Technical Skills Required

  • Communicates across the organization using oral, written and electronic media.
  • Will contact various groups such as Regulatory, Supply Chain, procurement, Marketing and external suppliers (raw materials, packaging, services, equipment, contractors, etc.), vendors/suppliers and potential business technical partners.
  • Works highly independently with minimum supervision using good judgment.
  • Performing work that is varied and may be somewhat difficult in character and involves supervisory approval as necessary.
  • Time management and prioritization skills to balance competing project and timelines in a fast-paced environment
