Occupational Summary

Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in supporting Duke University research operations.Perform a variety of communications, outreach, and educational duties related to translation and communication of research processes and outcomes.
The work for this position will be split between the Duke Superfund Research Center Research Translation Core (RTC) and the Outreach Component for the CIPHERS Project. The person in this position reports directly to the Sr. Program Coordinator for the RTC and the CIPHERS Outreach Component.

Work Performed

The person in this position will perform complex technical duties involved in research, literature review, and analysis supporting environmental health research. She or he will also compile, analyze, document, and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results and reports from technical literature. This employ will also focus on communication of science and policy around hazardous waste chemicals and sites (“Superfund” sites) as well as developmental health impacts of Cannabis exposure, and translation of basic research processes and findings for the scientific, governmental, and public audiences. The position has a specific link to the Research Translation Core of the Duke Superfund Research Center and the Outreach Component of the CIPHERS Project.
  • (70%) CIPHERS Project Outreach Component. As directed by the Director of the CIPHERS Outreach component and the Sr. Program Coordinator, the employee will conduct research, literature review, synthesis, and interviews with investigators to develop education and outreach materials for distribution to state-level policy makers. This will include summarizing and describing the impacts of Cannabis exposure on epigenetic markers to inform state legislators and other stakeholders, and creating materials for public health practitioners to share with the public.
  • (30%) The Duke Superfund Research Center (SRC) Research Translation Core (RTC) program planning and implementation. The Duke SRC RTC exists to effectively communicate research findings of the Program to scientists, policy-makers, and interested/affected community stakeholders. This position will perform research and analysis tasks for the Research Translation Core that have a significant impact on the successful achievement of bi-directional translation of research, science, and policy around hazardous chemicals and sites. In addition, the person in this position will use traditional and online science communication and social media tools to communicate with stakeholder groups.
  • Additional duties associated with the SRC as directed by the Director of the RTC. Additional job responsibilities may include assisting with office logistics, and special events, including, but not limited to:
  • Develop and implement appropriate information systems in support of program activities and provide adequate reference of data, documentation of procedures and processes and evaluation of program results.
  • Serve as liaison with internal and external entities, including Nicholas School offices, University departments and outside sources.
  • Plan and schedule work priorities in accordance with program goals and objectives and deadlines.
  • Participate in regular planning meetings to keep abreast of all programs.
  • Represent the SRC at outside meetings as appropriate
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Skills/Requirements

Work requires proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, mail merges, and email. Must be comfortable with technology, including web-based programs, presentation hardware, etc. As part of a professional program at a highly respected university, candidate must exhibit strong attention to detail in all work products. Must possess strong communication (oral and written), and customer service skills. Must demonstrate initiative, good organizational skills, handle complex assignments and produce quality work, and manage deadlines in a fast paced environment. Must be able to manage multiple projects at once. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Must be a self-starter. Requires flexible hours at times, and a willingness to travel to accommodate off-campus programming, conferences, or place-based sessions. Must be willing to perform field work in the out of doors, sometimes in difficult weather conditions. Must be willing to drive rented vans or vehicles to transport students and instructors.
