Job Description:

In just a little over a decade, PitchBook has grown into a global organization with offices in Seattle, San Francisco, New York and London. With consistent high double-digit growth since 2009, the company has become the industry’s leading source of private market data, serving more than 3,000 clients around the world.

As a four-time winner of the Best Workplaces in Washington award, PitchBook is committed to fostering an open, collaborative work environment driven by excellence, inclusion and fun. Our culture is at the heart of our success, and it’s something we work on every day.

Our primary home for the last decade, PitchBook’s Seattle office has grown from humble beginnings in a 200-square-foot windowless room to our current three-floor home in a downtown skyscraper. Located just blocks away from Pike Place Market and historic Pioneer Square, our headquarters boast stunning mountain views, open collaboration spaces and a startup culture that emphasizes hard work and camaraderie. Working in our Seattle office means growing your career alongside smart, dedicated people in the city where it all began.

Job Overview

Are you a naturally inquisitive person who enjoys digging into the details? Are you looking for a role where you can make an impact, gain product operational experience, and join a rapidly growing company that has opportunities at the next level for high performers across several departments? If so, we'd love to talk!

We are looking for Research Associates to categorize data on the private capital markets, improve data collection operations, and provide quality checks of existing data. The focus of the role will be on company taxonomy, which is the classification of companies into market spaces using descriptive text, tagging and structural categorization. You will be responsible for conducting research on new investment spaces (e.g. Regulatory Technology, Quantum Computing, Cannabis), building taxonomies, analyzing and creating written reports, and ensuring high quality research for all taxonomies on the platform. Once ramped, you will work with your team to improve processes, tools, and methodologies by identifying new improvement areas and devising solutions to existing ones.

Nearly everyone in Research starts as a Research Associate. This development approach creates a pathway for our Research Associates to grow into Senior Research Associates, Team Leads and Research Managers within a specific dataset team in the Research department, or to transition to a variety of roles on other teams at PitchBook.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience evaluating both quantitative and qualitative datasets
  • Strong academic writing ability is required. Must be able to synthesize large volumes of information into concise, informative reports
  • 1 - 2 years of professional work experience, which could be in the form of an internship
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, especially Excel, is desired
  • Experience with SQL is a plus

You may be the right candidate if you have:

  • A high attention to detail
  • Intellectual curiosity: you get excited about learning new things (especially pertaining to business, finance, and current events) and diving deep into the details comes naturally to you
  • The ability to work independently with minimal assistance or instruction for long stretches of time
  • Comfort in taking the initiative to formulate and pilot new ideas, experiment with unproven projects, and test hypotheses that may eventually fail
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills: you are able to effectively communicate and work with internal and external stakeholders, offshore teams, and leadership both in person and through email
  • The ability to prioritize and plan your time to suit your goals and the teams needs
  • Experience or interest in learning about the private equity, venture capital and M&A industries
