Summary:
Working in collaboration with the Director of Quality Assurance, the QA Manager - DHS will assist in the development, implementation, and enforcement of quality standards, policies, procedures and programs to ensure safe and compliant conditions for the manufacture, cultivation and packaging of cannabis and cannabis containing products at the Desert Hot Springs, California location.

This role includes responsibility for quality and product safety for vertically integrated processes, including cultivation, extraction, analytics, manufacture, packaging and customer/consumer satisfaction.

The QA Manager - DHS is responsible for assuring compliance with 3 rd party requirements (including state and/or federal). Potential audit examples: FDA or other Regulatory agencies, food safety related such as FOCUS, HACCP, or GFSI (cGMP); Kosher compliance, and/or ISO audits for quality management, testing and calibration, or environmental compliance

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage the DHS Quality Assurance department and personnel. Support all plant Quality related activities, including serving as the primary facility resource for problem identification, resolution, loss reporting and continuous improvement. Overall responsibility for facility sanitation.
Ensure all cannabis and cannabis containing products produced at the facility are properly tested in accordance with company procedures and guidelines, at appropriate frequencies, and meet specifications prior to release. Ensure testing data is appropriately recorded and maintained.
Ensure that non-conforming product is isolated and dispositioned appropriately. As required, perform root cause analysis, take preventive action and/or corrective action, and document appropriately.
Monitor and/or verify incoming product meets quality standards. Interface with suppliers as needed to ensure product compliance. Ensure all non-conforming product or components is/are isolated and dispositioned appropriately.
Develop and provide training for product quality and product safety requirements throughout the facility, including internal specifications and documents, HACCP, SSOP, cGMP, GFSI, FSMA, FOCUS, Kosher, etc.
Ensure the facility follows applicable Quality Management System directives. Develop and maintain documentation such as SOP’s, manuals, policies and procedures, work instructions, etc.
Support applicable ISO 17025 (Testing and Calibration) directives. Ensure all equipment used is calibrated appropriately and current on all preventative maintenance.
Ensure employees receive appropriate quality and product safety job specific training. Maintain records of employee training and qualifications.
Assist in aligning the company all state, federal and 3 rd party requirements. Conduct internal audits to ensure readiness and host audits from external auditors and regulatory personnel.
Ensure compliance to cannabis waste disposal requirements.
Maintain Finished Product specifications and labels (nutritional, labeling, shelf life, etc.) and ensure compliance.
Partner in the development and conduct quality planning method testing for all product lines. Design, implement and document procedures for process control, process improvement, testing and inspection.
Responsible for all facility quality related Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reporting and performance. Establish and implement Process Indicators (PI) and metrics (process capability, control charts, measurement quality) for monitoring system effectiveness. Establish collection and analysis systems of statistical data to predict trends that will affect and/or product quality. Report quality issues, trends and losses to management in a timely manner.

Competencies:
Expertise in a Quality Management role with an internal and external customer focus
Expertise in Laboratory Operations, Sampling, Testing, and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
Understanding of statistical concepts (Control Charting, R&R studies, Confidence Intervals, etc.)
Comfortable investigating problems by performing root cause analysis; Willingness to partner with Operations on corrective action efforts
Able to make appropriate independent decisions using SOP’s, specifications, and similar resources
Communication proficiency – accurately and factually communicate results of product quality results, product safety, and KPI performance
Willingness to collaborate with plant personnel, corporate personnel, and other teams
Strong discretion skills
Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
Comfortable working with medical cannabis and similar products

Supervisory Responsibility:
This position supervises the Quality Assurance department personnel and may indirectly supervise sanitation teams and performance.

Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional facility environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment and a large portion of the work will be performed in the plant where the noise may be loud.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
Must be available to work on-site during the “core” work hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some overtime and weekend hours expected.

Travel:
No travel is expected for this position.

Required Education and Experience:
3 years of experience in Quality Management
MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook
HACCP Certification required (or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment)
Must have at least 3 years’ experience working with a GFSI schemed Quality Management system (SQF, BRC)
Experience with HAZCOM and sanitation processes in manufacturing locations

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Food science or similar)
  • PCQI Certification
  • Food Defense Coordinator Level II
  • HACCP ADV
