Job Description:

A 2-year postdoctoral research scholar position is available in the Integrative Neurophysiology Laboratory (INPL) of Thorsten Rudroff, Ph.D., in the Department of Health and Human Physiology at the University of Iowa. The research at INPL focuses on developing a clearer understanding of fatigue and disability and the treatments in people with neurological diseases (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis (MS)). We also investigate new therapeutic approaches to neurological diseases. The current laboratory research focus involves the following areas: (1) Clarifying the origins of MS related fatigue; (2) Exploring the positive and negative effects of cannabis on quality of life and disability in neurological diseases (e.g. Parkinson’s disease, MS, Dementia); (3) The use of brain stimulation (transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)) to improve physical function and to lessen neuropathic pain in people with MS.


The INPL is using non-invasive imaging techniques such as Positron Emission Tomography, Computed Tomography, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging to examine the CNS–skeletal muscle interaction at a whole-body level.


The position is highly collaborative with the Departments of Radiology, Neurology, and Physical Therapy at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.


Duties and responsibilities: Responsible for performing experiments related to ongoing projects in the lab and projects conceived by the applicant. For each project, the applicant will design experiments and collect, process, and analyze data pertinent to the project. In conjunction with effectively planning and designing experiments, the applicant will be expected to operate and effectively use available technology at the University to facilitate the experiments. Additionally, the applicant will present work at meetings (from local up to international conferences) and will be expected to write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The applicant will also be expected to hold a leadership position within the lab and will be asked to help supervise and train graduate and undergraduate students, volunteers, and employees. Additionally, the applicant will coordinate research activities, conduct, lead and manage research projects, participate in meetings with investigators and research staff to help evaluate and interpret the validity of data, develop methodologies, and evaluate study procedures.


The position is for 2 years starting between Oct. 1, 2018 and Feb. 1, 2019.

Education Requirement:

Candidates must have an M.D. or a Ph.D. degree in human physiology, kinesiology, exercise physiology or related field.


Required Qualifications:

Laboratory experience in neurophysiology or exercise physiology research.


Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word/Excel and MATLAB or other data acquisition software.


Experience with statistical software (SPSS).


Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.


Experience with research grant writing.


Good working knowledge of neurophysiology and motor control.


Scholar must be highly motivated, have strong attention to detail, and ability to troubleshoot problems, and bring projects to completion.


Experience working with human subjects.


Desirable Qualifications:

Past experience with imaging studies and neurostimulation and some lab based experience including isokinetic and electromyographic measurements, and other basic lab procedures.
