Summary/Objective

Responsible for executing plant breeding activities that include but not limited to germplasm maintenance, parent selection, hybridization, collection of quantitative, qualitative and analytical laboratory data for traits of interest, plants inventory management, and cultivation of plants in the breeding program according to MedMen’s and State regulations. Assists the lead plant breeder in all aspects of experimental planning, design, and data analysis.Works collaboratively with the Agronomy and R&D team members to contribute to experimental planning and execution of various research projects.

Essential Functions

Assists the lead breeder in the creation and management of elite Cannabis germplasms
Applies advanced breeding techniques to advance trait based Cannabis germplasm improvements
Assists the lead breeder in executing plant hybridization processes, evaluation of progenies, and collection and archival of appropriate data as required
Shares personal observations and notes in assisting the lead breeder to make selection advancement decisions
Working collaboratively with Agronomists, Plant Health and Applied Research staff, helps to determine best practices for optimum cultivation of plants in the breeding program
Establishes guidelines and protocols describing plant breeding activities and tasks
Works in alignment with Cultivation Program Manager to create plant supply plans to support breeding efforts

Supervisory Responsibilities

Assists the VP of Agronomy with managing Plant Health Technicians

Travel

Occasional visits to production facilities is expected for this position

Required Education and Experience

Must be at least 21 years of age
Degree in Horticulture, or related degree, or equivalent experience
Prior plant breeding experience is preferable
Training and experience in molecular biology, statistics, plant physiology, pathology and biochemistry are desired
Knowledge of quantitative genetics, functional genomics, genetic statistical theory, and experimental design as it is applied to plant breeding
Strong process management skills
Skilled in working with technical experts
Skilled in utilizing and contributing to research related to agronomy optimization
Understanding of greenhouse production
Training/experience in general agronomy
Skilled in use of Statistical programs, Excel and Database systems
