The Opportunity

The Attorney General's Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Assistant 2 in the Government Compliance and Enforcement Division. This position is located in Olympia.

The Government Compliance and Enforcement Division provides legal advice to the State Auditor, the State Insurance Commissioner, Department of Financial Institutions, Gambling Commission, Horse Racing Commission, Human Rights Commission, Office of Minority and Women's Business Enterprises, Commission on African-American Affairs, Arts Commission, Asian American Affairs Commission, Code Reviser's Office, Office on Hispanic Affairs, Legislative Service Center, Historical Society, Board of Tax Appeals, Tax Preference Board, Salaries Commission, Secretary of State (except elections) and the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Committee. It also handles enforcement and forfeiture litigation for the Washington State Patrol, Public Disclosure Commission, Gambling Commission, Lottery Commission, Liquor and Cannabis Board, Department of Financial Institutions, Human Rights Commission, Horse Racing Commission, Insurance Commissioner, Office of Minority and Women's Business Enterprises, Executive Ethics Board, and Legislative Ethics Board. For the Department of Health, the division is responsible for the professional licensing litigation related to health professions licensed by boards and commissions.


Duties

As the journey-level classification in the Legal Assistant Series, this position uses independent judgment and knowledge of applicable court rules to provide legal secretarial support to assistant attorneys generals representing various state agencies, boards, and commissions in both a primary and backup function.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Typing, proofreading, and finalizing all outgoing correspondence and pleadings to ensure legal requirements and timelines are met.
  • Manage case files by reading, reviewing, and checking status of cases for approaching deadlines and keeping the assigned attorney and paralegal apprised of upcoming dates.
  • Maintaining the case files by ensuring documents are filed as directed by the assigned assistant attorney general and information is updated in Law Manager.
  • Schedule witnesses for testimony at administrative hearings and superior court trials; schedule depositions and arrange for locations, providing notice to all parties and court reporters pursuant to court rules.
  • Read and review incoming mail for assigned attorneys identifying all critical case dates and noting for attorney those items that require immediate attention.
  • Follow division and agency procedures to ensure dates and/or deadlines relating to the case are calendared appropriately in Outlook and Law Manager.
  • Create new matters, calculates and enters essential case data into the Case Management System.
  • Assist attorneys with maintaining calendars, meeting appointments, and case file deadlines.
  • Provide back-up phone coverage for the receptionist as needed.

Qualifications

Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge(s), review judge(s) or equivalent;

Option 2: One year as a Legal Assistant 1;

Option 3: A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal Studies or related field plus 1 year of legal office experience.

A Bachelor's degree may substitute for the Legal Secretary or Paralegal degree.
