Bylands is currently seeking a Lead Greenhouse Grower to lead our growing Greenhouse facilities. We are looking for an experienced manager with strengths in leading people.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
This position is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Greenhouse facilities, with a focus on the perennial and annual departments. The Lead Greenhouse Grower will have input into, and follow the production plan and ensure that all perennials and annuals are grown to the high quality standards of Bylands Nurseries Ltd. in the most economical, efficient and environmentally friendly manner. This role will be leading a team of up to 30 people during peak work periods.
Plan and manage the varieties and quantities of annuals/ perennials indicated in the production plan on a schedule that provides a continuous supply of product available for sale.
Ensure the excellent health and growth of plants including proper watering, fertilization, pruning, spacing, spraying, integrated pest management (IPM), and temperature control.
Plan and organize the departmental shipping process and ensure that assembled orders are weeded, labeled, packed and delivered to the loading area in accordance with the shipping schedule.
Management of goods, materials, supplies and equipment required for the department’s production and shipping processes.
Ensure that all buildings, structures and equipment in the Perennial Department are properly utilized and maintained.
To achieve this, you will be working to ensure the department has the best team possible. This includes forecasting, scheduling, hiring, training, evaluating and developing employees. You will also ensure the safety of employees through compliance with Environmental and Health and Safety regulations and maintaining an attitude that all incidents are preventable.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Highly motivated, self starter with excellent communication and leadership skills
Diploma or Degree in Science/Horticulture/Production or equivalent experience
Minimum of 5 years of supervisory and nursery industry/horticulture experience
Practical experience and knowledge in plant cultivation and identification
Proficient in Microsoft Office and production/inventory management systems
Pesticide Applicator’s Certificate
Available to work evenings, weekends and holidays, as well as, able to work physically in a role requiring extended periods of time standing, walking, bending and reaching in a wide range of weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, windy)
Fluent in written and spoken English; Spanish an asset
