This position reports to the Chief Scientist and supervises day-to-day activities of chemistry department including lab technicians, chemist I, chemist II, sr. science staff and microbiologist resources in fast-paced, state-regulated analytical chemistry lab.

Oversees sample receiving, chemical extraction, sample preparation, analysis, quality, reporting and daily lab operations. Oversees chemical analysis using LCMSMS, GC-FID, HPLC-DAD, Flame AA, GC-ECD as well as Microbiological analyses. Responsible for ensuring chemistry and microbiology staff are qualified and trained for tasks assigned per internal quality system requirements. Oversees hiring process for direct report resources. Oversees and performs method development and improvement driving continuous improvement program to meet cost reduction and quality goals. Ensuring SOP’s are written, up-to-date and all methods have met all validation requirements for ISO 17025 and State of CA. Develops, implements and maintains appropriate quality control processes and procedures to guarantee accuracy of analysis and quality of results. Performs review of all reported data and associated quality control, reports for delivery to clients and ensuring all reporting has been uploaded to appropriate databases for internet and regulatory access. Responsible for overseeing instrument maintenance, maintenance programs and repairs. Responsible for ensuring that inventory is properly maintained and ordered on time to meet production demands. Supports inquiries from Sales team, Clients and Bureau of Cannabis Control and responds as required to support the needs of the business.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
Requires a minimum PhD with emphasis in Chemistry or Biochemistry and a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in the field of chemical analysis, forensics or in a related area.
Applicant must have minimum 5 years experience supervising laboratory staff. A master level of competency in mass spectrometry and spectral data validation as well as a high level of proficiency and general chromatography skills, both LC and GC are required. Well-qualified applicants will have experience operating and providing supervision in ISO 17025 or government regulated analytical labs with an emphasis on method development and instrumentation skills. A depth of experience in chromatographic data interpretation and validation is required. A high level of competency in trace analysis of contaminants, pesticides or drug compounds and clear understanding of acceptable practices for data and method validation are needed.
