Job Description:

The Company: Green Leaf Lab is a cannabis analytical laboratory founded in Portland, Oregon. We are looking for a Lab Director for our new laboratory in Sacramento, California. Green Leaf Lab is a full-service, production oriented, cannabis specific laboratory using cutting-edge technology to characterize the chemical, physical, biological, and microbial properties of a wide range of samples submitted for regulatory compliance and operational purposes. We employ an assortment of analytical methods and have developed a unique combination of technology, experience, and capabilities.

Position: The Laboratory Director is responsible for planning, directing, organizing, and controlling the overall laboratory, including all analytical or microbial methods performed, data management, implementation of new technology, and related work as required. The Laboratory Director oversees chemists, microbiologists, physical chemists, technicians, and intake personnel who provide laboratory services to both the medical and recreational licensed cannabis industry. The Laboratory Director also oversees facility improvements and maintenance to improve efficiency and safety. This position will report directly to the Chief Science Officer. This position will require travel during training period. Position will be based in Sacramento, California.

Essential Duties:

  • Maintain laboratory ISO 17025 accreditation and continual compliance with State and local regulatory requirements, including quality checks and compliance of safety standards such as, but not limited to, OSHA, Fire Marshall and Police.
  • Oversee the Quality Assurance and Control Program, and direct any necessary corrective action.
  • Develop and maintain Laboratory policy and procedure manuals, quality procedures, operating procedures (SOP’s), equipment specific requirements, and evaluating and implementing new procedures as necessary.
  • Develop analytical methods for chemistry based genetic and microbiological assays.
  • Oversee the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and general records management.
  • Ensure company standards for quality and turn-around time for testing services.
  • Addresses problems and make timely, responsible, transparent, and sound decisions.
  • Involve others in formulating solutions to problems by gathering relevant information and conducting appropriate analyses, which includes responsibility for outcomes and/or impact of decisions.
  • Oversee Client Services, ensuring a high level of client satisfaction.
  • Provide consulting services as appropriate.
  • Maintain a high level of proficiency and current knowledge of leading trends in laboratory practices, including but not limited to, implementing new methods and processes to improve overall capability and efficiency.
  • Prepare and/or review regulatory, managerial, and operational reports.
  • Prepare and deliver oral presentations at tradeshow, industry events or government regulators.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in all appropriate situations.
  • Monitor expenditures and receivables to meet Company financial goals.
  • Develop facility improvement plans, secure budget, and coordinate capital improvement programs.
  • Formulate objective and priorities, implement plans, and allocate resources to achieve long-term goals of the organization.
  • Develop and train a highly skilled workforce based on organizational goals, budget considerations, and staffing needs.
  • Ensure that employees are appropriately recruited, including hiring, daily management, discipline, promotions and training.
  • Create annual work plans, monitor employee performance, complete periodic evaluations, counsel and discipline as necessary in accordance with guidelines.
  • Oversee and/or prepare employee schedules, including leave, to ensure adequate staffing to effectively handle daily and emergency response activities.
  • Provide appropriate laboratory resources and support to ensure that the workforce is able to meet current and future business needs.
  • Coordinate with Account Executive team to proactively assess and resolve client complaints and inquiries.
  • Compile and prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions as requested by executive management.
  • Oversee and manage equipment and supply inventory, including recommending purchases and ensuring budgetary constraints are followed.

Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in chemical, environmental, biological sciences, physical sciences or engineering, with at least twenty-four college semester credit hours in chemistry and at least two years of experience in the environmental analysis of representative inorganic and organic analytes.
  • 4 Years laboratory experience, including at least 2 years of laboratory management in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
  • Technical competence in analytical chemistry and/or microbiology.
  • HPLC, GC, MS, and Headspace sampling experience preferred.
  • Microbiological experience (plating, E.coli, salmonella) preferred.
  • Experience in evaluating instrumentation a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including technical writing.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Experience in computer database and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service, manages others, and collaborates with remote lab personnel.
  • Ability to work independently under remote supervision.
  • Problem Solving, solution oriented and production driven.
