Job Description:

Brookgreen Gardens is searching for a Head Greenhouse Grower & Nursery Supervisor! This is an exciting opportunity as this position reports directly to the Director of Horticulture under supervision from the Vice President of Horticulture and Conservation and is responsible for the supervision of crop-growing operations for the Lachicotte Horticulture Complex. This is a hands-on position to establish and operate under best practices for greenhouse care, including principles and practices of plant cultivation, propagation, and protection.

Examples of duties include:

  • Plan, organize, supervise and/or coordinate activities related to propagating, cultivating, and harvesting plant varieties for use in the Gardens and in plant sales
  • Identify plants and scout for treatment of insects, diseases, and weeds
  • Propagate seed and vegetative material and coordinate schedules including potting, labeling, irrigation, fertilization, and pruning
  • Supervise cultural practices in the greenhouse to promote crop health
  • Supervise volunteer activates related to maintaining and promoting crop quality
  • Create and maintain crop logs and records
  • Maintain plant inventory protocols for use in Horticulture in preparing seasonal garden plants and for plant sales, including plant selection recommendations
  • Utilize inventory in coordination with the Manager of Plant Collections and garden-wide inventory efforts

Minimum Qualifications: Completion of a bachelor's degree in horticulture or a related field and five years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape design, maintenance, or management position.

Knowledge of landscape design and maintenance, horticultural practices, and the inventory of locally hardy plants; knowledge of Integrated Pest Management techniques; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to supervise employees; ability to produce professional quality drawings and specifications; ability to work comfortably and effectively with volunteers, peers, and subordinates; demonstrated commitment to excellence in work products and relationships with co-workers and to high moral and ethical principles.

Completion of a bachelor's degree in horticulture or a related field and five years of increasingly responsible experience in landscape design, maintenance, or management position.

Must be physically able to perform the duties required in maintaining a large garden and be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.

Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.
