Job Description:

Who We Are

Since our founding in 1991, The Food Project has grown into an internationally recognized non-profit organization that works at the intersection of youth, food, and community. For over 26 years, youth and adults from diverse backgrounds have come together to produce healthy food for residents of the city and suburbs and build local, sustainable food systems. Each year, our youth crews work with our staff to farm on 70 acres in eastern Massachusetts in the suburban towns of Beverly, Lincoln, and Wenham and partner with our neighbors in Lynn and Boston's Dudley neighborhood to create the food system they imagine. We believe that food is a unique vehicle for creating personal and social change. Nothing else ties us so intimately to each other and to the planet we share, affecting our health, the climate, and culture. Moving into the future, our goal is to transform the food system into a more just, community-engaged model, that supports food security for all.

What We Seek

The Food Project is seeking a part-time Grower’s Assistant to work on our Lynn urban farms for July and August of 2018—specific dates listed below. The Grower’s Assistant will work at our urban farm and farmers market sites in Lynn. Our Lynn farms produce thousands of pounds of food each year, which is distributed through our farmers market, mobile markets, wholesale accounts and donations to hunger relief organizations.

This is a Tuesday through Thursday position that is ideal for someone who wants to explore urban farming and food justice. Our farms are run in partnership with youth and community members, therefore a candidate must have a passion for teaching and leading others. Our youth and neighbors reflect the tremendous cultural, racial, and socio-economic diversity of the city of Lynn. Candidates with experience working in multicultural settings are strongly preferred.

Qualifications

This is a farming position, but past experience on a farm is not required from a candidate, so long as they are ready to learn and take on new skills.

  • Candidates must be at least 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Candidates must be responsible, reliable, and able to work independently
  • Dependable, responsible, independent, and open to learning
  • Candidates must be able to pass a CORI/SORB check upon being hired
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule
  • Team-oriented individuals with a good sense of humor

Responsibilities

The Grower’s Assistant will work with the Lynn Farm Manager to supervise youth harvesting, washing, packing and distributing produce in the city of Lynn. The Grower’s Assistant will also work on the farm with youth participants in our Seed Crew, an intensive 6-week summer job for young people ages 14-17. This work is done in partnership with dedicated youth development staff.

Specifically, the Grower’s Assistant will support the following areas of our work:

  • Harvesting, washing and packing produce daily
  • Providing excellent customer service at our mobile markets, and modeling good customer service behaviors for our youth
  • Occasional delivery of produce to local restaurants and hunger relief organizations

Weekly Schedule: Thursday, July 5 through Thursday, August 23

  • Wednesdays – 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM (10.5)
  • Thursdays – 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM (8)
  • Fridays 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM (4)

Compensation

This is a part-time seasonal position from July to August of 2018, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The grower’s Assistant will make an hourly wage of $13/hour, for 22 hours/week, and receive vegetables from our farm.

Recruitment Process

We will review all submissions, identify viable candidates, and contact ONLY those individuals selected to continue in the search process. The position will be filled when the desired candidate is found.
