FORMULATIONS MANAGER

DEPARTMENT: Manufacturing/Science

SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS

Assist manufacturing team in the production of cannabis based medicines. Supervise/manage all aspects of laboratory production and analysis.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and refine formulation methods in conjunction with Scientific Director.
  • Train staff in extraction and other laboratory techniques as needed
  • Intimately understand the issues surrounding chromatographic determination of cannabinoid potency.
  • Create and characterize stock solutions and formulation solutions.
  • Formulate cannabis based products within given tolerance interval
  • Quantitate potency of extracts and plant material.
  • Run and maintain lab equipment including but not limited to HPLC, GCMS, RotoVap, Novasep, fractional distillation.
  • Write and update lab procedures
  • Keep organized records of all procedures and results using good laboratory practice
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Able to work independently as well as operating as a team
  • Performs weekly safety-checks of fire-extinguishing equipment, eyewash stations and shower stations. Attends safety meetings as required.
  • Perform other functions as necessary to provide an adequate supply of product to meet patient demand.
  • Keep inventory of lab equipment and supplies to ensure continuity of lab functionality
  • Assist with lab and systems implementation in other states/jurisdiction in conjunction with the scientific director

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to Scientific Director, General Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related discipline is required. An advanced degree in chemistry or a related discipline is preferred. Expertise with HPLC is required. Expertise with GCMS and LCMS is preferred. Both mental and manual skills are utilized. Attention to detail is crucial.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to communicate orally with management and other co-workers is crucial. Regular use of the telephone and e-mail for communication may be required. Sitting or standing for extended periods is common. Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents.

Some heavy lifting may be required. Exertion of up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally may be required. Good manual dexterity for the use of common office and laboratory equipment. Must be comfortable operating and troubleshooting scientific and packaging equipment.

Good reasoning ability is required to solve a wide range of problems.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job is performed indoors in a traditional laboratory setting. Exposure to chemicals and laboratory agents is expected. Protective safety clothing, goggles, gloves, facemasks, or hat are required as needed. Activities include extended periods of sitting or standing and extensive work using laboratory and packaging equipment and machinery.
