We seek a hard-working and highly motivated Field Application Specialist with interdisciplinary experience in business, science and testing lab methodology, and technology to work with a fun and dynamic team in the most exciting and fast-paced cannabis industry across the United States at Steep Hill’s Berkeley, CA location. The role of Field Application Specialist is extremely important within the company and requires a multi-faceted skill set. The ability to work across a variety of tasks in a startup environment is an essential attribute for the successful candidate.
The Field Application Specialist will report to the Global Expansion Team Licensing Director. The Field Application Specialist will be responsible as the point of contact with Licensee Labs; partnering with Licensing Labs to guide the installation and launch of the scientific methods for each licensee laboratory. The Field Application Specialist will train Licensee partners in operation of HPLC-UV and LCMS/GCMS instruments and analytical testing methods and will lead implementation for SOP’s and Validation Method Protocol configurations. They will supervise, provision, and guide licensees on facility planning, equipment layout, and installation of scientific methods. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Become intimate with the Steep Hill science platform and all critical lab functions to help licensees and JV partners smoothly adapt workflows and applications
  • Train licensee partners in operation of HPLC-UV and LCMS/GCMS instruments and laboratory analytical testing methods
  • Supervise the provisioning and guide the installation and launch of the scientific methods for each licensee
  • Lead implementation support for SOPs and Validation Method Protocol configurations for licensees
  • Liaise with Quality Manager to provide guidance to licensees in establishing GLP/ISO-17025 compliance
  • Work with the Global Expansion Team and licensees on facility planning, provide guidance on facility selection, and equipment layout plans
  • Work with the Global Expansion Team, Science team leaders and licensees to scope and quote all Required Equipment listed in the Steep Hill licensing agreement
  • Work with Science and Development team leaders to ensure any Authorized Platform changes are promptly communicated to licensees, with adequate adoption time provided
  • Maintain expertise in the testing regulations in all licensee and JV markets and ensure all SOPs in each market match the regulations
  • Serve as the “first responder” service provider for all licensee science and some technological matters
  • Proactively communicate all scientific methods and/or process changes to every licensee and JV partner in advance, on an ongoing basis
  • Ensure that any changes made to Steep Hill corporate SOPs are communicated to licensees and JV partners proactively
  • Interface between Steep Hill’s Science and Development teams and licensee partners to maximize output and customization and minimize drain on the Science team
  • Respond and diagnose all licensee requests and/or issues with Steep Hill scientific methods, and efficient laboratory work flow, escalate to Science team when needed
  • Manage and respond to science-related questions on ZenDesk, escalate to Science team leaders when needed
  • Prior to initial deployment and on an ongoing basis thereafter, train licensee staff on Steep Hill’s methods and scientific ecosystem to help optimize licensee satisfaction and commercial success
  • Work proactively with licensees to ensure maximizing the benefits of the scientific methods
  • Support Marketing Team to help co-develop licensee training videos
  • Interface with regulatory bodies and licensees to advise on testing limits, elevating to Science team when needed
  • Provide Global Expansion management team with weekly implementation and scientific methods adoption updates for all licensees, identifying successes and particular points of friction
  • Work with internal QA team to support licensees in ISO-17025 accreditation process. Implement and maintain proper QAQC program and record keeping process for ISO audits, and help ensure that licensee lab is generating legally defensible data
  • Support licensee in conducting method validations to define test requirements
  • Liaise and coordinate internally between Global Expansion, Development, and Science teams
  • Provide pre- and post-lab implementation and technology maintenance support, interfacing with Development team as/if needed
  • Assist in the continuing review of present deployment systems and methods, and determine appropriate changes to effect improvements, reduce costs, and enhance efficiency
  • Optimize licensee lab deployment plan
  • Coordinate content creation and translation for licensee materials
  • Collaborate with Steep Hill’s management team to reach organizational and departmental goals
  • Determine opportunities to streamline current processes
  • Delegate, manage, and/or perform a wide array of cross-departmental leadership tasks and projects, on an as-needed basis
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients and colleagues
  • The ability and willingness to provide advice and education to clients as necessary regarding the tests best-suited to their requirements
  • Perform other duties and assumption of other responsibilities on an as-needed basis, or as delegated
  • Personal drive and commitment to ongoing improvement of the Licensee and Customer Experience at Steep Hill
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Bachelor of Science (ideally, Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry) degree required, M.S. preferred
  • At least 2 years of experience in analysis of samples using GCMS, LCMS, ICP-MS, HPLC/UPLC-MS (which includes but is not limited to: calibration builds, knowledge of QC/QA procedures, familiarity with analysis software, such as: Shimadzu LabSolutions, or equivalent, troubleshooting scientific instrumentation)
  • At least 2 years of proven work experience as a lab manager or lab analyst
  • Minimum of 3 years of proven work experience managing clients and/or accounts, in a sales or consultative capacity, exhibiting excellent interpersonal and diplomacy skills
  • Technical computer experience
  • LIMS experience (preferred)
  • Possess strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Confident, driven, and dynamic team player
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, create timelines, and meet deadlines
  • Multi-task oriented and excellent time-management skills
  • Exquisite interpersonal skills
  • Discretion and the ability to deal with confidential information
  • Foreign language is a plus
