Summary/Objective
The manager of extraction position manages single site day-to-day operations in a regulated, cannabis extraction environment through a team of extraction leads and/or technicians. This includes extracting cannabis through various methods and post-extraction processing, to ensure quality oil and terpene supply for the manufacturing of product. Position may participate in product development and be responsible for supporting future product launches and methods of extraction. Regulatory compliance is an important responsibility of this role as well. The position partners with the manufacturing and cultivation managers to ensure the production of high quality products in an efficient manner.
Essential Functions

- Perform extraction and related processes using some or all of following materials / techniques: CO2, butane, propane, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, ice water extraction, and heat and pressure
- Develop and maintain extraction operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing operational policies and procedures
- Partner with production team on all elements of the extraction and product preparation process
- Oversee and assist with the setup and production of the extraction lab
- Maintains accountability and inventory of all raw materials, finished products, and by-products of the extraction process.
- Train and assist team members to get equipment optimized for production
- Apply scientific techniques, procedures, or methodologies to complete tasks
- Effectively communicate results to both technical and non-technical personnel
- Interact with business team members to address technical or regulatory questions and provide solutions to problems
- Alongside the Human Resources department, provides leadership for employee relations through effective communications, coaching, training, and development.
- Work with Plant Manager to design or redesign with extraction areas
- Provide leadership to ensure that safety and company policies are adhered to consistently and effectively.
- Coach and provide input to supervisors to provide quality, timely and consistent performance management reviews as well as support ongoing performance recognition as well as disciplinary action as needed.
- Provides leadership for problem resolution to facilitate fast improvements and improved working relationships.
- Manages material requirements to increase inventory turns and reduce levels on hand.
- Ensures compliance with company standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, OSHA, safety, and complete and on-time delivery at the lowest possible cost.
- Maintain compliance with all FDA, cGMP, and SQF Program.
- Balances work cell capacity/loading across the plant.
- Determines operations headcount needs and ensures compliance with company policies.
- Identifies, communicates and drives implementation of capital investments and improvement projects.
- Manages compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Oversees the cleaning and maintenance (as well as documentation) of all extraction rooms and equipment both pre and post-use.
- Leads &/or provides guidance in the creation of and revision to Standard Operating Procedures and Manufacturing Batch Records.
- Leads the investigations of any manufacturing deviation from written instructions and product &/or material component Out of Specification reported or observed result(s).
- Maintains management tool(s) to control the timely closure of any investigation or Risk Assessment Corrective & Preventive Actions.
- Continually performs a manufacturing documentation gap assessment to ensure sufficient written instructions are available to subordinate staff.
- Works with MedMen Training Department to build and maintain subordinate staff training curriculum, including when necessary activity “performance” demonstrations.”
- Maintains management tool to ensure subordinate training requirements remain current.
- Actively identifies and implements department cost reduction activities.
- Actively leads space-planning and implementation activities.
- Contributes at a lead level to the establishment and maintenance of area Key Performance Indicators.
- Maintains transparent inter-department written communication system regarding end of day accomplishments, unplanned events, next-day’s scheduled activities, roadblocks/work-arounds and decisions needed.
- Establish equipment identification numbering system, with comprehensive field labeling.
- Establish and maintain equipment files to include any qualification/commissioning documents, repair or modification history, preventive maintenance and calibration records.
- Contributes to the selection of new extraction equipment purchases.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position manages all employees of the department and is responsible for leadership, performance management and in partnership and approval of the Human Resources department, hiring of the employees within its department.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment as well as on the floor cleaning room presence. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This job requires the employee to lift at least 30 lbs. infrequently.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are typically Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel
Travel is primarily locally during the business day, although some out of the area travel and overnight may be expected, especially for initial training.
Required Education and Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent
- 5+ years in manufacturing products (experience in food production strongly preferred)
- Experience with lean manufacturing processes and best practices in safety
- Excellent interpersonal, team building, organizational and oral and written communication skills
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor's in Chemistry or equivalent experience

- Leadership certifications and demonstrated project management experience
- Kaizen and Lean Manufacturing techniques
- Demonstrate leadership by actions and acts as an example to others at all times
- Excellent experimental design, data collection, results interpretation, and problem-solving skills

- Effective at time management, detail-oriented, highly organized, and motivated by accomplishment
- Ability to present ideas effectively and communicate well with all levels of management within a team environment on a variety of programs and projects
Work Authorization/Security Clearance
There is no visa or H1-B sponsorship. Must successful complete and pass background and drug screen, and live scan.
