The San Luis Obispo County Department of Planning and Building is conducting an open recruitment for the position of Division Manager to lead and manage the Building Division's Code Enforcement efforts, programs and services.
The selected candidate will be responsible for directing the (1) Building Division Supervisor and (8) Code Enforcement Officers whose responsibilities include verifying compliance with and enforcement of State and local codes and ordinances pertaining to nuisance abatement, housing, zoning, vehicle violations, as well as permitted and non-permitted cannabis cultivation.
The Division Manager must possess a broad knowledge of building, zoning and housing, and land development codes and a demonstrated ability to formulate discretionary judgments and determinations for complex and/or disputed cases. This role will require proven and effective communication skills as they oversee and provide direction in the management and enforcement of all Code Enforcement programs while seeking solutions for both citizens and the community. The selected individual will be required to work closely with representatives of elected officials, public safety and health departments at the local and state level, including providing highly responsible and complex support to the department's Director, County Counsel, the County Administrative Office, and governing Board of Supervisors.
Under direction, plans, organizes, controls and directs the operations and activities of the Building Division in carrying out the administrative and technical provisions of the construction codes and related State and County regulations; coordinates and directs communications, information and personnel to meet County needs and assure smooth and efficient of Building Division activities; supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel; and does other related work as required.

The Ideal Candidate
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in architecture, civil or structural engineering or a closely related field. (Job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.) In addition, five years of increasingly responsible experience in the administration and enforcement of construction codes, two years of which were in a supervisory position. (A master's degree or bachelor's degree in two fields such as life science and planning is desirable and may substitute for one year of non-supervisory professional experience.)

1. A valid driver license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
2. Possession of a valid Certificate as a Certified Building Inspector, Plans Examiner or Building Official or State registration as an architect or civil or structural engineer is required at the time of application and must be maintained throughout employment.
