Summary

The Dispensary Assistant is a key component in the support of the CDMI Clinics. The Dispensary Assistant is responsible for the dispensing, collecting, processing and general care of dental instruments, equipment and all supplies utilized in the CDMI Clinics. Must be able to adapt to work schedule changes based on the hours of the clinic.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a welcoming atmosphere to improve morale and to promote collegiality among student doctors, faculty and staff.
  • Participates in instrument, equipment, supply and inventory management.
  • Prepares and processes instruments, supplies and equipment.
  • Cleans, disinfects, packages and restocks instruments, supplies and equipment.
  • Utilizes aseptic techniques when handling instruments, equipment and supplies.
  • Tracks inventory and dispenses dental instruments, supplies and equipment.
  • Sorts and stocks supplies.
  • Maintains the organization, cleanliness and general appearance of the dispensary space and related storage facilities.
  • Maintains an inventory of instruments and supplies as required for proper function of the dispensary and clinics.
  • Maintains a welcoming atmosphere to foster a high level of morale in the workplace and to promote collegiality among Student Doctors, Faculty Members and Staff.
  • Assists in the training of new employees.
  • Substitute for Dental Assistant and/or Sterilization Assistant as requested.
  • Participate in the quality assurance within the department.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintains the inventory control system for disposable supplies.
  • Distributes instrument, equipment and supplies in a timely fashion.

This position requires a significant amount of interaction with the public and many internal customers and therefore, the individual must be able to develop positive rapport effectively. The ability to maintain a professional demeanor, be detail oriented and promote a welcoming atmosphere is essential, and to set priorities while under pressure. The ability and willingness to cross train in other areas of the Dental Clinic is required. The ability to interact professionally with vendors is also required. The individual must have the ability to become familiar with the axiUm dispensary and inventory tracking system. This position requires a high degree of knowledge of dental products, troubleshooting equipment, multitasking, paying attention to detail and organizational skills.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or GED is required. A minimum of 1-2 years work experience in a dispensary or dental office is preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with a dental background and a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience. The individual should be a person committed to ensuring that a work-friendly environment exists with faculty and students. The individual must have the ability to become familiar with axiUm Dental Software Management System.

Computer Skills

Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and general Dental Software required.

Language Skills

Intermediate skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Reasoning Ability

Basic skills: Ability apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Mathematical Ability

Basic skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs.
