Job Description
The Director, Procurement & Vendor Management leads the Direct and Indirect Material categories, including strategy planning and execution for categories and sub-categories. Spend for these materials represents several million dollars annually and includes such categories as: cannabis-based raw materials, cannabis-based CPG’s, packaging materials, supplies, transportation, capital goods, professional services, equipment, and others. The Director is accountable for the development and execution of overall strategy for Procurement and Vendor Management areas including opportunity sizing and analysis, sourcing project management, identification and achievement of savings and other value improvement targets, value capture execution, and the supplier management strategy.
Key initiatives will include: competitive sourcing through disciplined RFP’s, supplier contract negotiation and management, demand management and process/policy re-engineering. This leadership role is also responsible for providing financial and business analysis (e.g. data mining and interpretation of procurement and financial systems), capturing global market intelligence and trends in the category area and acting as the focal point for category subject matter expertise in the organization. The Director must collaborate seamlessly with a high diversity of stakeholders, including Supply Chain, Operations, Information Technology, Finance, Legal, Facilities / Real Estate, Administrative Professionals, to name a few.
The position will enable the development of formalized Category Management infrastructure and strategic sourcing which collaborates with stakeholders on a global basis to ensure these are implemented effectively. The Director is expected to develop an organizational roadmap which includes the creation of key category management roles. Through the development and application of rigorous current and future Category Management tools, systems and processes, the Director will deliver measurable and impactful business value (operational and financial) aligned with the business goals. The Director will also take personal ownership of large, complex contractual arrangements and provide subject matter expertise for other supply and commercial arrangements as required.
The Director leads Direct and Indirect Materials processes on a global basis across a multi-million-dollar revenue business, and develops associated tools, platform, and policies to achieve cost reductions and drive operational excellence. This position reports to the VP, Supply Chain.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop, document, drive, and effectively communicate a moving 1-year pipeline of Direct/Indirect Material categories and sub-category initiatives and opportunities (Savings / Productivity / Risk Management / Innovation) designed to generate bottom-line business impact and improve the quality of goods and services provided by vendors to Caliva.
- Lead the development and execution of the Category Strategic Plan and ensure plans are appropriately resourced and executed per targeted goals.
- Lead the Procurement Operations team and the business.
- Lead the Vendor Management initiatives through building strategic relationships that meet and/or exceed the needs of the business
- Drive vendor scorecards to track vendor performance and lead the review sessions with vendors through periodic reviews and collaborative initiatives to drive lower cost.
- Conduct risk assessments. Conduct supplier capability analysis.
- Create, manage and execute large-scale and multi-vendor RFPs
- Communicate effectively across all stakeholder groups, including Regional Business Units, Operations, Supply Chain, Information Technology, Finance, Legal, Facilities / Real Estate, Administrative Professionals, etc.
- Track, analyze and communicate key performance metrics.
- Recruit and motivate team members to work independently and as a team toward the project objectives.
- Support the Caliva’s long-term vision of operational excellence.
- Drive experimentation and adoption of innovative new sourcing and procurement approaches.
- Apply process improvement methodology where appropriate.
- Lead and drive stakeholder meetings.
- Follow Company policies and practices while representing Caliva in an ethical and business-like manner in all interactions with employees, governmental agencies, growers, customers, etc.
- Ensure the security of Caliva’s confidential and proprietary information and materials.
- Establish and manage relationships with suppliers who can provide Caliva with technology innovations, speed to market, continuously improved quality and overall supply value for growth and improved financial returns.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be able to work in California
- Must pass a background check with SJPD
- At least ten years of sourcing and procurement leadership experience required; preferably in perishable goods and/or complex technology-oriented industries.
- Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, economics/accounting/finance, systems engineering or other technical field is required. Master’s degree preferred
- Prior experience working in with multi-site, global businesses.
- Demonstrated success and a history of high performance accomplishments, particularly in strategic sourcing and category management.
- Proven track record of driving change across large organizations and keeping teams energized and motivated.
- Very strong analytical skills.

- Demonstrated success on a global basis, working across cultures and time-zones.
- Experience managing and collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
- Domestic and international travel required at times to fully understand regional operations. A valid passport and the ability to travel internationally without restrictions are also required.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) fluency a plus.
- Ability to effectively work with others in a highly collaborative manner and inspire camaraderie in the teams.
- Experience developing and managing a cost center budget. Profit & Loss experience is a plus.
- Proficiency with computer platforms such as Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook is required.
- Excellent communicator at all levels from individual contributor to VP/President levels. Outstanding oral and written skills, including presentation skills, are required.
