GENERAL INFORMATION

This recruitment is being conducted to fill a vacancy for the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office and to establish an eligible list to fill future full-time and part-time vacancies throughout Stanislaus County.

ABOUT THE COUNTY

Stanislaus County is located in Central California within 90 minutes of the San Francisco Bay Area, the Silicon Valley, Sacramento, the Sierra Nevada Mountains and California's Central Coast. The County was established in 1854 and has a total land area of 1,515 square miles. Temperatures range from an average low of 38 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter, to an average high of 85 degrees in the summer.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Office of the District Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of all misdemeanor and felony crimes that occur within the County. District Attorney staff represent the People of the State of California in both criminal and quasi-criminal cases, provide support and assistance to crime victims, and work in partnership with local law enforcement agencies to promote public safety. Our mission is to SEEK JUSTICE, SERVE JUSTICE, DO JUSTICE.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The District Attorney's Office, Bureau of Investigation, has a staff of, two Lieutenants and sixteen Criminal Investigators. Persons appointed to Criminal Investigation positions carry full peace officer status and will work under the direction of the District Attorney.

Typical duties will include technical investigative assignments, assisting in trial preparation, and locating and obtaining statements from subjects involved in matters submitted to the District Attorney's Office. A considerable amount of fieldwork will be involved. Investigators may be assigned "on call" duties on a rotational basis and are subject to assignments after normal hours and on weekends. Examples of case assignments include homicide, official misconduct, white collar crime, consumer fraud, auto insurance fraud, cannabis enforcement, child abduction and grand jury inquiries. Some positions could involve considerable out-of-area travel.

POST CERTIFICATION PAY
Intermediate: 6.5% of base salary
Advanced: 10.0 % of base salary

BILINGUAL PAY
An additional 2.5% of base pay will be paid to eligible certified bilingual employees.

  • Assist other law enforcement agencies as requested;
  • Arrest suspects;
  • Prepare and serve search warrants;
  • Locate and serve victims and witnesses subpoenas;
  • Provide office security and safety;
  • Transport prisoners;
  • Attend autopsies on homicide victims;
  • Transport victims and witnesses, including children;
  • Conduct Grand Jury and other specialized investigations; and
  • Travel out of state to perform investigations, including child recoveries

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR I/II
  • Law enforcement procedures and criminal investigative techniques;
  • Basic accounting procedures and their application to law enforcement investigations;
  • Criminal Law, evidence and court procedures;
  • Interview techniques and report writing skills; and
  • Communication skills, proper sentence structure and word usage.


CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Pursuant to Section 1031.5 of the Government Code, permanent resident aliens who desire to be employed as a Peace Officer must have applied for citizenship.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR I
  • Graduation from high school or successful passage of the General Educational Development Test (GED); AND
  • Two (2) years of experience in law enforcement or related criminal investigative work; AND
  • Active basic or higher California POST certificate is required.
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR II
  • Graduation from high school or successful passage of the General Educational Development Test (GED); AND
  • Three (3) years of experience in law enforcement or related criminal investigative work; AND
  • Active basic or higher California POST certificate is required.

Proof of education and a copy of your California POST Certificate is required for verification purposes at the time of application. LICENSE
  • Applicants must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License and remain free from repeated preventable accidents.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Five (5) years of experience in law enforcement as a Sworn Criminal Investigator, Detective or an equivalent position in California; AND
  • Possession of a California POST Intermediate Certificate.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to pass a thorough background investigation, including fingerprinting; AND
  • Successful Completion of Investigations and Trial Preparation Course within one year of hire.

CLASSIFICATION INFORMATION

Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the District Attorney Investigators Bargaining Unit for labor relations purposes.

Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months for a total of eighteen months. The probationary period does not apply to unclassified positions.
