We are seeking a hard-working, self-starting, and highly motivated Controller with strong communication, leadership and organizational abilities to become a part of a fun and dynamic team at Steep Hill (Berkeley, CA). The role of Controller is extremely important within the company and requires a multifaceted skill set. The successful candidate and their team will be responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the accounting and financial reporting systems. The ability to work on a number of tasks, sometimes in changing or stressful situations, is an essential attribute for the successful candidate. The Controller reports to the VP of Finance and is responsible for managing a team of staff accountants and overseeing accounting and reporting, audits, accounts payable, budgets/planning, payroll processing, sales / use tax compliance, income tax compliance, property tax compliance, fixed asset management, collections, accounts receivable, management reports, credit management, internal controls, policies and procedures, and cost accounting at Steep Hill’s central location in Berkeley. The successful candidate will demonstrate attention to detail, organization, and professionalism. This position is a balance of managerial duties and hands-on activities. Steep Hill laboratory locations are expanding throughout the United States and internationally, with company owned labs operating in California, New Mexico, Washington state, and Jamaica, as well as licensee locations in Alaska, Hawaii, Maryland, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Canada, and several to-be-announced international locations. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversee the maintenance of the accounting system and company records
Prepare financial reports and provides status updates on the financial condition of the company
Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential
Budgeting and Planning – Assists with the compilation and development of the annual capital and financial plan
Accounts Payable - Oversee vendor payable processing
Payroll - Oversee processing of payroll
Regulatory Reporting –This includes filing applicable compliance reporting, tax statements and filings (business, property, payroll, revenue, etc.)
Credit Management – Oversee all functions related to the extension of credit to customers, including accounts receivable, customer financing, and collections
Work with Management to develop, document, monitor, and enforce company internal controls and policies and procedures
Management of accounting cycle from beginning to end
Oversee consolidation of subsidiary accounting records
Responsible for the month end closing process including making all the necessary journal entries REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
Must be at least 21 years of age
Must be comfortable working in the cannabis industry
BS in Accounting is required
CPA required, Master’s degree preferred
7 or more years of experience in public and/or managerial accounting is required
Detail oriented and organized, with the ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects
Strong PC capability (Microsoft Office, Xero, Abacus, Zen Desk, Revel)
Statutory accounting and regulatory filing experience highly desirable
Understand and follow verbal and written instructions; work independently in the absence of supervision
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Must be able to work in a fast-paced setting, multitask, and prioritize assignments
Must have good communication, computer, typing, and organizational skills COMPENSATION:
