Job Description:

CCE of Schenectady County is seeking an incumbent to assist the Program Coordinator of the Sustainable Living Center & Fehr Ave Garden. The Assistant Grower helps deliver and coordinate primarily youth agriculture/horticulture education programs designed to engage the diverse population of Schenectady County in serving their community and the support of a sustainable local food system.

This is a part-time, temporary position, with scheduled work hours which may fluctuate depending on the program needs and growing season. The position is typically 17 hours/week, starting in May or June continuing through the end of October (the end of the growing season). Application Instructions

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 6 months volunteer or work experience working with youth participants (teens aged 14-18) or in the field of agriculture.
  • Ability to read English and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work independently, be resourceful and self-motivated as well as function highly in a team work setting.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check requirements.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Ability to perform the following functions, primarily during the growing season, with or without reasonable accommodation: frequently work in outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat, precipitation and cold; frequently lift, move or transport program & facility /gardening materials and produce; and constantly perform and demonstrate agriculture and horticulture techniques (for example preparing garden beds, planting, weeding, harvesting and washing vegetables and herbs, pest management, composting) by frequently positioning self (for example, pulling, bending, reaching, touching, kneeling, using hands to feel/reach) in greenhouses, garden beds and other program areas.

  • Some college experience preferred.
Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Program Responsibilities:

Program Delivery - 20%

  • Demonstrate horticulture/gardening techniques.
  • Assist with teaching existing horticulture educational program.
  • As part of a team, supervise youth participants and adult volunteers in garden activities.
  • As part of a team, assist in marketing garden produce through established programs.
  • Responsible for assisting in the safety and well-being of youth participants in all settings.
  • Presents as a positive role model.
  • Immediately reports unique and/or emergency situations to supervisors.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Coordination/Operation - 75%

  • With assistance from supervisor, coordinate Roots and Wisdom garden sites: Sustainable Living Center and Fehr Ave Garden. Tasks may include, but are not limited to, site planning, soil preparation, seeding and transplanting, composting, greenhouse work, irrigation, produce harvesting, marketing and distribution, and record keeping.
  • Office/administration duties such as mailing, filing, copying etc.
  • Provide non-complex routine administrative tasks to support the delivery of established educational program goals. Perform specific tasks to support program schedule.
  • Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
  • Complete and submit all required reports, records, including incident reports and purchase orders in a timely manner
  • Occasionally travel to various locations in an effort to meet program material and marketing needs. Examples include but are not limited to purchasing and/or delivering program materials, taking pictures and notes, etc..

Professional Improvement - 5%

  • Participate in required orientation and training programs.
  • Attend weekly leadership meetings.
  • Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety - Applied to all duties and functions.

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Position Details

This is a part-time, temporary nonexempt time position . Compensation paid at the rate of $12 per hour . This position is eligible for limited, statutory benefits only.
