Tax Administration The Tax Administration Division is responsible for fostering voluntary compliance and narrowing the tax gap by identifying, educating, and auditing non-compliant taxpayers. The Tax Administration Division audits the tax returns of businesses and individuals filed, including sales/use, meals, rooms occupancy and special fuels, are subject to examination by the Tax Administration Division staff.
Duties: The Department of Revenue is seeking candidates for the Tax Examiner II position in our Operations Division to provide quality service to taxpayers and/or their representatives. As a Cash Processor/Customer Service Representative, your duties will include but not be limited to:


  • Accepts and processes tax remittances, including cash payments, from taxpayers involved in the cannabis industry through strict adherence to cash management and cash control protocols.
  • Coordinates with stakeholders, including couriers, financial personnel and public safety officials, for the accounting, reconciliation and security of cash payments.
  • Answers incoming telephone calls from taxpayers on the Taxpayer Hotline in order to respond to questions, explain tax laws, policies and procedures and resolve problems.
  • Provides technical assistance to taxpayers or their representatives in person, by telephone or in writing by answering questions, explaining tax laws, policies and procedures and resolving problems.
  • Properly records account transactions and activities; writes detailed case notes in order to maintain correct filing and payment histories.
  • Researches and verifies the accuracy of taxpayer accounts; contacts taxpayers by telephone or in writing to obtain additional data or takes necessary actions for effective communication exchanges and updated tax records.
  • Educates taxpayers on proper tax filing and payment procedures by informing taxpayers of their rights and responsibilities with respect to their tax statuses.
  • Promotes tax compliance by assisting taxpayers in the tax registration process, in filing and paying current taxes due, by collecting overdue taxes, by setting up payment agreements, by taking enforcement measures to resolve delinquencies or by issuing refunds within the assigned delegation of authority.
  • Manages a queue of work items involving tax registration, filing, auditing, account maintenance or compliance issues, through research, verification and/or adjustment in accordance with established agency policies and procedures.
  • Exercises discretion in the handling of confidential information and maintains the security of taxpayer records.


Preferred qualifications:
  • Customer service experience in a high traffic, deadline driven workplace.
  • Knowledge of proper cash handling procedures.
  • Experience in processing cash transactions in a fast-paced, secure environment.
  • Solid numeracy skills, including the ability to reconcile and balance ledgers and cash drawers.
  • Effective problem-solving and complaint resolution abilities
  • Keen negotiation and mediation skills, as well as the ability to diffuse conflict.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to research and appropriately evaluate information and various options to exercise good judgment and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team depending on organization’s focus and work goals.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strict detail orientation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Good time management skills; must be dependable and able to manage multiple assignments.
  • Technology aptitude with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Enthusiasm for a career in public service and the desire to contribute to the Department of Revenue’s mission.




Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting, auditing or tax examining work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for the required experience.*


  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operators License may be required.
