Job Description:

Job Purpose

Working under the direction of the Grower, the Assistant Grower will be assigned a specific crop (or set of crops) and will be expected to bring in that crop on time and according to established internal specifications. The Assistant Grower will also interact with Production Supervisors while directly supervising other assigned employees. The Assistant Grower may be responsible to manage irrigation and fertilization, and to ensure that their crops remain free from diseases and pests. Soil management and environmental control are typically part of the Assistant Grower's set of responsibilities, as is crop timing, scheduling, predicting and planning.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan daily greenhouse needs (Put-Away’s Moves, loads, etc.) with crew lead person.
  • Assist in space planning to utilize all greenhouse square footage
  • Provide daily written Work Plan to irrigators/sprayers of tasks, priorities for upcoming day
  • Communicate in a timely manner with Head Grower regarding any growing, safety, and labor concerns
  • Provide counsel and corrective steps to employees who fail to complete assigned tasks in a timely and safe manner
  • Communicate tasks and directives from Head Grower/Production Manager to employees, and ensure compliance and completion
  • Maintain accurate records of physical inventory, (i.e. tray quantities, locations, plant ready status, returns & dumps) for all work orders in growing space
  • Maintain accurate LTS records daily
  • Calibrate irrigation and chemical application equipment every 3 months
  • Coordinate with Production Crew Leader regarding plant shipment/movement (i.e. Verimark applications, watering and mowing plants for loading).
  • Ensure growing space is safe (inspections of eye-wash stations, fire extinguishers, etc.) as well as sanitary (no water leaks, weeds, trash, etc.)
  • Pest and Disease Identification, Control and Management.

Water and Soil Management (including monitoring and recording soil EC and pH values). Understand and comply daily with Company’s Injury & Illness Prevention Plan.Assist in training new employees with specific job duties, safety requirements, and locations of first aid kit, eye wash stations, MSDS, etc.

Responsible for record keeping associated with plant and labor management

Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Essentials

High School Diploma

Minimum of 4 Years of Experience

Supervises a small group (3-10) of employees, usually subordinates.

Assigns and checks work; assists and instructs as required and performs same work as those supervised, or closely related work, a portion of the time.

Content of the work supervised is of non-technical nature but presents numerous situations to which policies and precedents must be interpreted and applied.

CA Private Applicator Certification (Applies to Pesticides and other Chemicals) preferred

Computer Skills: Basic Microsoft word

Physical Activities

While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to be walking, frequently required to use hands to fingers, handle, or feel, talk or hear; and occasionally to sit, or stand for long periods of time, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision; and color vision.
