We are looking to add an Assistant Grower to our soon to be completed, state of the art greenhouse in Fort Valley, Georgia.
Job Summary:
Assists the Head Grower in all phases of the greenhouse operation including; taking water samples, mixing fertilizer, recording and measuring plant data, monitoring plant growth, and training staff.
Major Responsibilities:
- Assists in all aspects of the production process including; integrated pest management, climate management, crop maintenance, labor planning and scheduling
- Mixes and applies fertilizers and pesticides as needed
- Assists in managing greenhouse climate control systems
- Assists in crop inspection; removes substandard or diseased plants to maintain quality standards
- Maintains current knowledge of growing techniques and technologies
- Monitors the working environment to ensure that company and statutory hygiene, and health & safety policies and procedures are complied with
- Reports food safety and quality problems to personnel with authority
- Ensures all GMPS, SOP’s and policies & procedures are followed
- Other core expectations as defined by the company
Qualifications:
- 2–4 year degree in Horticulture, Agriculture or related field or 2-5 years of greenhouse industry work experience
Required Skills/Experience:
- High-wire growing experience with tomatoes and cucumbers is a definite asset
- Calculation of amounts, proportions, percentages and volume for the application of fertilizers, chemicals and water
- Knowledge of major plant groups and their culture and growth traits
- Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices, Health and Safety, Food Safety, HACCP and the PrimusGFS program
- Identification of plant diseases and the existence of insects
- Good verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills to train team members and interact with all levels of the organization
- MS Office computer skills; familiarity with Priva software is an asset
- Able to work in a team
Work Environment:
- Conditions typically found in a greenhouse with high humidity and varying temperatures
- The employee will need to listen and talk to other employees as well
- Available to work flexible hours; some holidays, weekends and evening hours as work volumes require
- Exerting from 15 – 50 lbs. occasionally, 20 lbs. of force frequently and 10 lbs. of force constantly in order to lift and move product
- Bending, stretching, twisting, crouching, grasping, reaching, and lifting above shoulders
- Standing, sitting and walking for prolonged periods of time may be required
