Job Description:
Works with plant production/landscape specialist in the propagation, care and maintenance of SMSC's live plants that are produced. Schedules planting calendars, and applies technical procedures including environmental controls and various plant care applications to maintain a quality and healthy end product.
Job Duties:
Plan for growing activities that are consistent with identified production schedules. Prepares space required for planned production.
Monitors growing conditions utilizing timing and meter devices, and reviews changes in humidity, moisture, ventilation, light, and temperature and cultivation procedures to ensure conformance with quality control standards.
On a regular basis, inspects crop to ascertain conditions such as leaf texture, bloom size and the existence of pests or disease; removing substandard or diseased plants to maintain quality standards. Applies pesticides as required using technical procedures.
Assists in the development of growing procedures for new species in product line and new cultivation techniques. May assist in training new employees in growing techniques and activities.
Maintains records of growing techniques and production to be used to help identify trends and to forecast future space needs.
Maintains current knowledge of growing techniques and technologies. May assist in training new employees in growing techniques and activities.
Participates in outdoor planting projects and annual plant sale operations to include preparations, setup, and execution.
Assists the Plant Production/Landscape Specialist in his or her duties as needed or directed.

Job Requirements:
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Horticulture or related field.
Horticulture and/or landscape experience to equal three years is required.
Minimum of 3 years of experience growing plugs/young plants
Valid driver's license with good driving record required.
Must have or previously have had a MN pesticide applicators license. If not currently in possession, must be able to obtain a MN non-commercial applicators license with 60 days of employment
Experience with all types of pesticides
Requires knowledge/experience with both annuals and perennials (native plants).
Ability to operate small-engine landscaping/snow removal equipment
Industrial Truck Driving permit may be required (forklift)
Intermediate computer skills required.
On feet or standing 90% of time.
Exposure to fumes/odors.
Some outdoor work.
Ability to work in conditions typically found in a greenhouse with high humidity and varying temperatures, with a fair amount of moisture present.
Ability to exert up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently and 10 pounds of force constantly in order to lift and move product.
Ability to balance, reach and grasp with climbing on a step stool and/or ladder.
Ability to crouch, grasps, and lift product above shoulders in order to lift product from the floor properly.
